Reverend David Kennedy & Mike Burden
Photographed for People Magazine in Laurens, South Carolina
Story by Kara Warner
I went to Laurens, South Carolina to photograph Rev. David Kennedy and Mike Burden, former grand dragon of the KKK in the area. When Burden decided to leave the Klan and had nowhere to go, Rev. Kennedy and his congregation opened their homes to him and his family. We photographed this in what was once the Redneck Shop, a white nationalist and Neo-Nazi clothing store that became headquarters for the Aryan Nations’ World Congress until 2012.
Since being sold by Burden, the plan is to now take this dilapidated building featuring a large faded painting of the Nazi flag and turning it into a community and diversity center, but they need our help. To donate to their cause, visit https://www.rehabhate.com/.
